ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A Bethlehem man drowned in the Lehigh River on Monday, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office confirmed Tuesday.
Antwan D. Daring, 35, was pronounced dead at 4:01 p.m. Monday at the emergency department of St. Luke’s Hospital’s Allentown Campus, according to a release from Coroner Daniel A. Buglio's office.
Daring reportedly had been tubing in the river with friends or coworkers when the incident occurred about 3 p.m. Monday near the 600 block of Waterfront Drive in Allentown.Lehigh County Coroner's office release
An autopsy completed Tuesday confirmed Daring died due to drowning, with the manner of death listed as an accident.
Daring was recovered from the river by members of the Allentown Fire Department.
Daring reportedly had been tubing in the river with friends or coworkers when the incident occurred about 3 p.m. near the 600 block of Waterfront Drive in Allentown.
Daring's death comes just eight days after another area drowning death.
Gary M. Conley, 53, of Forks Township, was confirmed dead from complications associated with drowning while swimming in the Delaware River on June 7.
Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek also ruled that death accidental.
The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Forest Service states there are 3,536 unintentional non-boating related drownings in the country annually, amounting to about 10 deaths a day.
When it comes to swimming, the service advises to never swim alone, to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency procedures, avoid diving in unfamiliar areas, avoid alcohol and stay away from areas that exceed your skill level.
For rivers and streams, the USDA offers more specialized tips, including wearing a life vest, even if you are tubing, rafting, or kayaking.
