ArtsQuest winter courses: painting, anime classes find new homes after Banana Factory closes

ArtsQuest has announced its new schedule for upcoming art classes. The classes have temporarily moved to new locations due to the closing of the Banana Factory.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. —  While plans for demolition of the Banana Factory are underway, ArtsQuest has found new spots to hold its visual arts programs.

The new classes will occur at Spring Garden Elementary School, the Bethlehem Area Public Library, ArtsQuest's campus, and the Artist Garages in Allentown.

Registration for the classes can be completed online at the ArtsQuest website.

Winter weaving

Winter Weaving Workshop with Sara Cunard

What: During the three-hour workshop, Cunard will teach students how to 'warp' their looms (warping is a fundamental step in the process of preparing a weaving loom for a new project) and use three different weaving techniques to create a finished product.

Students' kits will come with tools and color-coordinated yarn to use in the class.

Cunard will also supply extra fiber for students to learn about different fibers.

At the end of the workshop, students will be supplied with a dowel to the top of their design for easy-to-hang/take-home capability.

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15

Cost: $55 or $49.50 ArtsQuest members

Cartooning and Anime for All Ages with Cotty Kilbanks

What: Kilbanks, whose work has appeared in cartoons such as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, "ROCKO's Modern Life," and "South Park," will teach students how to draw old and new cartoons of different styles as well as create their own.

Additionally, Kilbanks will discuss techniques such as form, volume, proportion, design, shading, and color.

The classes last four weeks.

When: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 through Sunday, March 9

Cost: $120, $108 for ArtsQuest members

Jewelry making, Bob Ross method

Creating jewelry with polymer clay

What: Artist Alexandra Schnabel will lead a two-week class on how to create charms for necklaces, earrings and bracelets with polymer clay.

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to walk away with custom, wearable jewelry.

When: 6:30 — 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 through 12

Cost: $90, $81, ArtsQuest members

Where: Artist Garage, 520 Hamilton St., Allentown

Paint Like Bob Ross: Silent Forest, Silent Forest (Wine’d Down Workshop) with Chris Severn

What: Severn, a certified Bob Ross instructor, will guide students through a step-by-step technique to create landscape paintings similar to Ross' style. The class is suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike.

It is suggested that attendees wear older clothes and bring a roll of paper towels.

When: 6 p.m. March 7

Cost: $68.00, $61.20 ArtsQuest members

Peaceful painting

Sacred Symbol Paint & Breathe Wine’d Down Workshop with Michelle Lee

What: The class will start with a guided meditation that will feature music and breathwork followed by the creation of an "intuitive" painting.

Lee is a yoga teacher and the region's first Certified YogART Workshop Facilitator.

She will also teach a YogArt class inside the Fowler Furnace Blast Room on April 26.

When: 12:30 p.m. March 29

Cost: $65, $58.50 ArtsQuest members
