Different from music of the time

Cake came on the scene in a burst of productivity in the late 1990s with songs that diverged wildly from what was on radio at the time.

Lead singer John McCrea delivered intelligent lyrics in a droll and monotone voice over music infused with country and even Latin sounds. Trumpet was a prominent instrument.

It released its debut album "Motorcade of Generosity" in 1994, but didn't find broad success until its sophomore album, 1996's "Fashion Nugget," which sold double platinum and broke the Top 40 on Billboard's overall Albums chart.

That disc included both "The Distance" and the gold hit "I Will Survive."

Its third album, 1998's “Prolonging the Magic,” had the alt-chart-topping gold single “Never There,” and also sold platinum.

It's fourth album, 2001's “Comfort Eagle” was its highest-charting, peaking at No. 13, and also went platinum, with its funk-infused hit “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.”

Its most recent album was 2011's "Showroom of Compassion," which topped the album chart and had the No. 4 alternative hit "Sick of You."
