BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A free evening show featuring a modern spin on a Greek Tragedy is coming to Touchstone Theatre.

The ensemble-based theatre troupe will present a staged reading of "Spit Out the Poison" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

The drama was written by Touchstone's ensemble member Matt Prideaux.

It tells the story of Paul, a self-proclaimed party animal, who is throwing a party for his retirement, normally thought to be a happy occasion.

"It’s emotionally raw and, at times, painful. But for those who are a little broken, like me, I hope it provides comfort."

At the party, mayhem ensues, and Paul questions his life choices.

Prideaux has been working on the script for 10 years and was inspired by Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 hit musical, "Company."

"Company" questions societal fixation on marriage and manhood and is the winner of six Tony awards.

“With this piece, I am exploring themes of masculinity, identity, and societal expectations. At its core, it is a confrontation of what happens when someone is forced into a mold that doesn’t fit — and the damage that can result,” Prideaux said in a release.

“It’s emotionally raw and, at times, painful. But for those who are a little broken, like me, I hope it provides comfort. I hope you feel seen, understood, and a little less alone.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Due to its material, the performance is recommended for ages 16 and up.

Although tickets are free, reservations are encouraged to secure a seat.
