Northampton County residents might find themselves receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a Sergeant from the Sheriff's Department. Police are advising this is a scam.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Northampton County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of reports of a scam in which a person purporting to be law enforcement calls about missing jury duty.

In a release, the department said its received reports about a caller identifying themselves as Sgt. Walker, "telling them they have failed to appear for jury duty."

The caller then says the resident needs to buy a MoneyPak card and give the county the card number to "cash it in," in order to avoid being arrested and charged with contempt.

"The public should be aware that this is a scam."

"The public should be aware that this is a scam," the release says. "The Northampton County Sheriff's Department does not call residents and solicit money in lieu of arrest."

The department advises residents to report any "suspicious solicitations" or scams to the state Attorney General's office at 1-800-441-2555 or email them at scams@attorneygeneral.gov.
