EASTON, Pa. — A Stroudsburg resident convicted of killing a Lehigh Township man was sentenced Tuesday to 20-40 years in state prison — the maximum allowed by law — in Northampton County court.
In November, Stroudsburg resident William Arthur Strunk pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree murder. Initially, investigators charged him with criminal homicide, possessing a weapon, and carrying a firearm without a license, according to court records.
Northampton County Court of Common Pleas Judge Paula Roscioli handed down the sentence Tuesday morning.
According to the Northampton County District Attorney’s office, Strunk confessed to shooting 67-year-old Michael Powers in his home on the morning of June 27, 2022.
Pennsylvania State Police investigated the shooting and filed the resulting charges, a representative of the DA’s office wrote in a statement Tuesday.
Because Strunk is 77 years old, his 20-40-year sentence “is effectively a life sentence,” the statement reads.
Strunk’s prosecution began in 2023 under former district attorney Terry Houck; his successor, District Attorney Stephen Baratta, oversaw its conclusion.
