Easton City Council resolves to protect women’s rights
EASTON, Pa. - Easton CityCouncil voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a resolution in support of abortion access.
The resolution, introduced by Councilwoman Taiba Sultana at the meeting, denounced the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Sultana said it also calls upon local and state representatives to support women’s rights.
“A lot of states are banning reproductive rights,” Sultana said. “And we want to make sure that our state, (the) Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, receives the support before even they go further with the constitution.”
Easton was the site of a large rally for abortion rights earlier this month.
There, Sultana delivered a speech encouraging citizens to reach out to their council members in support of her resolution.
Sultana said the resolution has the potential to result in action that sparks change, especially if other city councils in the Lehigh Valley follow suit and create similar resolutions.
“Being (the) only woman on council, I think this is my duty to protect women’s rights,” Sultana said. “I have a daughter. I want her to have a choice just like I had in the past.”
