Easton hosts resource center Sunday for victims of Ferry Street fire

The Memorial Day fire tore through nearly all the rowhomes on the north side of the 900 block of Ferry Street on May 29, 2023.

EASTON, Pa. — The City of Easton has opened a facility for those affected by the fire that devastated Ferry Street on Memorial Day, offering assistance to those who lost nearly everything in a matter of hours.

According to a release from Fire Chief Henry Hennings, a Multi-Agency Resource Center, or MARC, will be open to those affected by the blaze from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Paxinosa Elementary School.

Residents are encouraged to visit the MARC, which will be in the cafeteria of the school at1221 Northampton St. Street parking is available; those visiting should go to the main entrance area of the school on Northampton Street.

The Global Disaster Preparedness Center describes MARC as "an efficient way to deliver services to individuals and families affected by a disaster by bringing together multiple service providers in a single location and providing on-site assistance."

Paxinosa initially served as an emergency shelter in the aftermath of the fire that broke out on Ferry Street in the afternoon of May 29. It affected 15 homes and displaced 44 people.

Nearly all of the north side of the 900 block the street was hit by the fire, which remains under investigation, leaving dozens of residents with nearly nothing.

In the time since the inferno, the American Red Cross and various local partners have joined forces to help individuals and families make their way forward.

Locals showed solidarity with the victims, sending supplies, money and gift cards to help support those in need.

An initiative to collect furniture for the fire victims is in the works, though it will take time to find a proper location to store the supplies.

Those who wish to provide further assistance to those affected by the fire can still do so via a fund organized by the United Way or via mail (checks payable to United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, 1110 American Parkway NE, Suite F-120, Allentown, PA 18109, attn. “Ferry Street Fire Fund”).

Additionally, individuals interested in making a donation can text “EASTON” to 40403. Gift card donations are also encouraged.
