PALMER TWP., Pa. — Palmer Township Stormwater Authority has acquired a $3.8 million loan to help fund initiatives to prevent flooding.

The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, or PENNVEST approved the $3,793,000 loan, to be used to increase capacity and ensure adequate drainage along Old Nazareth Road during heavy rainfall.

“This is an important project as we continue to work to prevent significant and dangerous flooding in Palmer Township. It is another example of the commonwealth partnering with a local authority to assist with a critically important public safety project."
State Sen. Lisa Boscola, in a news release

The funds will go toward installing 605 feet of 24-inch smooth-lined corrugated polyethylene pipe, 585 feet of 48-inch smooth-lined corrugated polyethylene pipe and 1,638 feet of 60-inch smooth-lined corrugated polyethylene pipe to separate drainage flows.

It also will be used to relocate existing infrastructure to increase capacity and ensure adequate drainage during large rainfall events.

Twenty-three inlets and two manholes also will be constructed as part of the project.

'Maintain our employees'

Old Nazareth Road has seen substantial damage from heavy rainfall over the years, including flooding in August 2020 and the early 2000s.

Established in 1988, PENNVEST provides funding for sewer, storm water and drinking water projects.

In a news release announcing the funds, state Sen. Lisa Boscola said the "funding will enable the Palmer Township Stormwater Authority to address safety hazards along Old Nazareth Road due to frequent flooding that have occurred along the road during periods of heavy and extended rains.”

“This is an important project as we continue to work to prevent significant and dangerous flooding in Palmer Township. It is another example of the commonwealth partnering with a local authority to assist with a critically important public safety project,” Boscola said.
