BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Every Tuesday, Chris Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, sits down with LehighValleyNews.com politics reporter Tom Shortell for Lehigh Valley Political Pulse on WLVR.
They discuss the latest trends emerging from science-based polls to break down local, state and national campaigns and issues.
This week, the two discuss the outcomes of the general election — including Northampton County's significance in elections.
"Republicans, from former President Trump to Dave McCormick to Ryan Makenzie, all won races, you know, at the statewide or congressional level, here in the Lehigh Valley, and having the sweep, if you will, of four Republicans at the end might have been a little beyond what I expected," Borick said.
Shortell brought up what many voters have questioned — if Democrats campaigned hard enough on certain issues this election.
Ultimately, a lot of perception that could have swayed the outcome of the election, Borick said, is that "the country is largely in a dour mood — negative."
The two also talked about Northampton County's record of picking the president. The county has a 120-year streak of selecting the president elect.
"So these are close elections, but it does have this, this impact of capturing where the country is," Borick said.
"And I always argue it's in the secret mix of North Hampton County. It's urban, it's suburban, it's rural, it's growing Hispanic population captures a lot of things that are happening."
