Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., listens as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol holds a hearing at the U.S. Capitol on June 16, 2022.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Former Republican U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney has endorsed incumbent Democrat Susan Wild in the race for Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District.

Wild, D-Lehigh Valley, who is being challenged by Republican state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, becomes Cheney’s first House endorsement of the 2024 campaign season.

“Susan and I served together in the House, and while we may not agree on everything, I know that she holds a deep respect for the integrity of our democracy,” said Cheney, a former congresswoman from Wyoming and formerly the No. 3 Republican in the House.

“We need thoughtful and serious people in Congress who will uphold the rule of law.”

“I thank Representative Cheney for putting country over party with this endorsement, and look forward to continuing my work for Pennsylvania’s Seventh District."

Cheney endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for president earlier this month.

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney fell out of favor with many Republicans after voting to impeach President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

She also served as vice chairwoman of the House committee that investigated the insurrection.

Mackenzie, a 12-year state representative, has picked up some heavy-hitter endorsements of his own. Last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, visited the Lehigh Valley in support of him.

Trump, who is challenging Harris in a bid to return to the White House, endorsed Mackenzie in August.

Wild, who is running for a fourth term in Congress, said in a prepared statement that she was grateful for Cheney’s endorsement.

“I thank Representative Cheney for putting country over party with this endorsement, and look forward to continuing my work for Pennsylvania’s Seventh District,” Wild said.

Cheney visited the Lehigh Valley earlier this year for a lecture at Lehigh University. In her remarks, she portrayed Trump as an existential threat to American democracy.
