BETHLEHEM, Pa. — WLVR’s Brad Klein reviews the week’s astronomical highlights with Bethlehem’s ‘Backyard Astronomy Guy,’ Marty McGuire. This week, Brad and Marty discuss Tuesday’s full moon. It’s known as the ‘Pink Moon.'
According to McGuire, the full moon of each month has a name — more of a nickname, really. He points out that the ‘Pink Moon’ won’t actually be pink. This moon was named after a flower or herb called ‘moss pink,’ McGuire said. It’s in the Phlox family, and a conspicuous Spring wildflower.
According to McGuire, the Maine Farmers’ Almanac came up with many of the names for the full moons of each month.
Other named moons include the so-called ‘Blue Moon’ which designates those rare occasions when a second full moon occurs within a calendar month.
