BETHLEHEM, TWP., Pa. — A new photo exhibit at Northampton Community College aims to educate the community about breast cancer.

"67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania," will be on display at the college inside the Laub Lounge at 3835 Green Pond Road.

The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 22.

The exhibit is a partnership between the PA Breast Cancer Coalition and Northampton Community College and the college's Hispanic Caucus.

The display coincides with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The traveling exhibit features photos of women from each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, along with stories about how breast cancer has touched their lives.

The survivors in the exhibit showcase the diversity of Pennsylvania and the impact breast cancer can have on families and communities.

The exhibit also encourages women to learn the importance of breast cancer screenings and early detection.

Second most common cancer

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States.

According to the Breast Cancer Foundation, Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age with more aggressive forms of the disease — such as triple-negative breast cancer, which has fewer targeted treatment options.

Latinas also tend to be diagnosed with breast cancer at more advanced stages, according to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

PA Breast Cancer Coalition has curated the exhibit since 1994.

It has been hosted by 142 communities and is updated with women's stories yearly.

Additionally, this year's display features the stories of a handful of women who reside in Lehigh and Northampton counties.
