Powell founded Third Day with guitarist Mark Lee and keyboardist Billy Wilkins in 1991. The group released its self-titled, major-label debut album in 1996.
That disc went gold and produced three No. 1 Christian single hits: "Forever," "Blackbird" and "Nothing at All."
With its third album, "Time," in 1999, Third Day topped the Christian chart and had three more No. 1 Christian hits.
Over the next decade, it had 15 albums that charted in the Christian Top 10, and sold a total of 12 million copies.
Seven topped the Christian Albums chart, and 13 crossed over onto Billboard's overall Top 100 chart. The 2008 album "Revelation" peaked at No. 6 on Billboard's overall chart.
Group and solo success
Third Day's bestselling albums were its live albums "Chronology Volume 1" and "Chronology Volume 2," both in 2007, which both sold double-platinum.
It had 27 songs that hit the Christian singles chart, and 20 that hit No. 1. Its hits "Cry Out to Jesus" in 2005 and "Soul on Fire" (featuring All Sons & Daughters) in 2015, both hit gold record sales.
Powell won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 2002.Dove Awards
Third Day released its last studio album, "Revival," in 2017 and a live disc, "Live from the Farewell Tour" in 2019, when it disbanded.
The group was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards in its career, and won four, all for Best Rock or Pop Gospel Album. It won 24 gospel Dove Awards from 42 nominations.
Powell won the Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 2002.
He has released six solo albums, with 2019's "Back Again" peaking at No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
His latest release was "New Creation" in 2021 — the title song of which hit No. 4 on the Christian chart. His latest song, last year's "I Love Jesus," peaked at No. 30 on that chart.
Third Day headlined Bethlehem's Stabler Arena in 2004, 2006 and 2015.
