HELLERTOWN, Pa. — Hellertown Borough Council on Friday approved the resignation of Police Chief Robert Shupp.

Matt Marcincin, council vice president and head of the emergency meeting, said officials recently came across some “discrepancies” with the now-former chief’s payroll.

“Following this discovery, the borough council conducted a preliminary investigation, which revealed that these discrepancies were not caused by clerical errors but were more serious,” Marcincin said.

The council agreed that the next step would be to allow an investigation by an outside source, referring the matter to the Pennsylvania State Attorney’s Office. The council also authorized borough attorneys to coordinate with the investigation.

And since the matter has been turned over to the state authorities, Marcincin said borough officials would offer no comment until the investigation is completed.

The panel tabled the appointment of an interim chief to give officials the chance to interview for another qualified candidate within the police department to take the role.

Officer Dominick Fragano will be taking command of the police force for the time being.
