Allentown School District will work with a new transportation provider for the next five years.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Allentown School District on Thursday chose a new transportation provider for the next five years.

Student Transportation of America's contract will begin July 1. Until that time, First Student will continue, then conclude, its contract with the district, according to a news release.

The new contract will cost the district almost $60 million over the life of the agreement, which means a cost estimate of $10,992,811 in the first year.

"The safety of our students is always our highest priority."
ASD Superintendent Carol Birks

The contract allows for 3.85% annual increases and was calculated to allow for full-size buses, mini-buses, lift buses, vans and hourly rates for monitors and expected field trips.

Seven transportation companies vied for the contract and were evaluated based on qualifications including experience, safety records and cost, the district said.

Bus equipment, offerings

Based in Wall Township, New Jersey, STA provides transportation for more than 30 school districts and intermediate units in Pennsylvania.

All vehicles will be equipped with two-way radios, GPS systems, and Child Check-Mate systems which require bus drivers to walk to the back of the bus after every shift to make sure no children remain in the bus.

Additionally:

  • All vehicles designated for special-needs routes will be equipped with air-conditioning and three-point seat belts
  • All buses will be equipped with four cameras, and all vans with one camera
  • All buses will be equipped with intercom systems so the driver can communicate effectively with children
  • All buses will be equipped with top strobe lights for improved safety
  • All vehicles will display the words “ALLENTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT”

"The safety of our students is always our highest priority," ASD Superintendent Carol Birks said.
