LCCC is holding a free information session Nov. 20, 6-7 p.m. for anyone interested in learning about becoming a tractor trailer or heavy truck driver.

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. — Lehigh Carbon Community College will hold an information session on its Commercial Drivers License (CDL) training program Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. it announced.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts employment for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is expected to grow 5% from 2023 to 2033.

There are more than 89,000 truck drivers in Pennsylvania, which has one of the highest employment levels in the field and the fourth-highest number of truck drivers in the country, according to BLS statistics.

In May 2023, the annual mean wage of heavy and tractor-trailer drivers was between $58,780-$77,790, BLS says on its website. According to ZipRecruiter, top earners make $94,225 annually and a monthly pay of $7,852.

Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) offers a Commercial Drivers License program at its Schnecksville campus. A free information session will take place for anyone interested in learning more about the career and four-week four classroom, skill development and road training program.

According to CDL Driving Academy, Pennsylvania’s strategic location makes it a hub for truckers.

“With routes that connect the East Coast to the Midwest, Pennsylvania is essential for interstate transportation, contributing to its high number of truck drivers,” it states on its website.

The college offers Class A Tractor Trailer training in as little as four weeks, in classes held during the day, weekends or evenings. In the CDL program, students learn defensive driving, maintenance, trip planning, equipment inspection, road safety, and laws.

Enrollment is offered on a rolling basis, with new classes beginning every four weeks for the daytime program, and every eight weeks for the evening and weekend programs.

LCCC partners with national workforce training provider Ancora Training to prepare people for the truck driving industry. Ancora contracts with colleges and corporations nationwide. Its offerings emphasize hands-on learning and road safety, according to the LCCC release.

People interested in learning more about the field are invited to attend the info session, held in Room 106 of the Community Services Center on LCCC’s main campus, 4525 Education Park Drive in Schnecksville.
