When advising a commercial banking client, Adam McMahon frequently experiences a déjà vu moment.
That’s because McMahon – who joined Truist in November as its Market President for Lehigh Valley and Northeastern Pennsylvania region -- has often been in that business owner’s shoes.
“I think I crammed 15 years of experience into three years of running our family furniture business,” says the Clarks Summit native, who led his family’s Corporate Environments furniture company for a few years until selling it in 2022. “Having been a business owner, and wearing all the hats they wear, I bring a very unique perspective to my role in commercial banking.”
McMahon recently returned to banking, the field that launched his career. Upon graduating with a degree in economics and finance from Lafayette College, where he played varsity baseball, he worked in commercial, corporate and institutional banking leadership roles, in Lancaster and Washington, D.C., for eight years. In 2019, he married his wife, Megan, and moved to Lehigh Valley to join his parents in running the family’s businesses – just months before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like most business owners during that tumultuous time, McMahon dealt with numerous challenges in overseeing the 80-employee company – including quickly financing and relocating a warehouse. He also helped his dad, Patrick, operate One Point, the Scranton-based office supply and business services company founded by his grandfather.
“The experience I gained in HR, operations, sales and logistics has been really valuable for me,” he explains. “I really understand what many business owners are going through, including developing succession plans. I know that’s important for many of our commercial banking customers at Truist.”
Travis Rhodes, Truist’s regional president for Pennsylvania and New Jersey, said McMahon’s local knowledge and experience will help grow the business.
“Adam will collaborate with our clients and their changing needs using our Business Lifecycle Advisory approach, where we work with customers to guide them through every stage of their business,” Rhodes says. “Adam has experienced those stages first-hand with his family business and we look forward to his success in the market.”
McMahon leaped at the opportunity to grow commercial banking in the Lehigh Valley and northeast Pennsylvania area for Truist. He will be responsible for serving businesses from start-ups to those generating up to $100 million in annual revenue. He says one of the reasons he was drawn to Truist, a top 10 commercial bank in the U.S., was its commitment to its purpose of inspiring and building better lives and communities.
“Helping serve and grow the community has always been important to me. I learned that from my parents,” adds McMahon, who for several years has served on the Board of Directors of the nonprofit Miller-Keystone Blood Center, which provides blood to 35 hospitals in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey; and on the Board of Governors for Lehigh Valley with Valley Youth House, which serves children and teenagers in need throughout the region.
He is also on the 2024-2025 United Way Campaign Cabinet, led by Chris Martin of Martin Guitar, and he is the vice chair of the Tocqueville Cabinet and will be its chair next year.
In addition to his philanthropic pursuits, McMahon enjoys spending time outdoors, golfing and skiing, and with friends and family – especially his 2 ½-year-old son who is already showing signs of following in his dad’s footsteps as a sports fan.
McMahon plans to help Truist meet its growth goals for commercial banking in the fast-growing Lehigh Valley region by leveraging his experiences in both finance and business operations, and the skills and dedication of Truist’s team of banking experts. The results of those efforts, McMahon believes, will benefit customers, the communities Truist serves and the bank.
