ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Residents who use public transit in the Lehigh Valley soon will be able to pay their fares online.
The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority says it will roll out a “modern” fare-collection system, dubbed ValleyRide, in the spring.
ValleyRide simplifies the process of collecting fares and offers LANTA customers “a more efficient, user-friendly experience,” LANTA Executive Director Owen O’Neil said in a news release.
After the system’s launch, riders can use a ValleyRide SmartCard or online account to pay their fares.
LANTA’s ValleyRide also includes a new “fare-capping” feature that will let riders save on daily and monthly passes and automatically apply reductions to fares when possible, according to the release.
Those updates make rides “smoother, faster and more equitable” for customers, O’Neil said.
LANTA deployed 64 compressed natural gas buses at the start of 2024, making it the first public transit authority in the state to rely on natural gas. It phased out diesel buses in 2021.
The new fuel comes from eastern Pennsylvania landfills.
